Kentucky Registered Apprenticeship Summit – September 10-12

Kentucky Registered Apprenticeship Summit – September 10-12

Kentucky’s Registered Apprentice Program, like many others, began in the 1930s after passage of the Fitzgerald Act, which was designed to bring protection and structure to apprenticeships. Revolving around the core sectors of construction and manufacturing, until recently the program centered in urban areas attracting limited segments of the population. With the election of Governor Matthew Bevin in 2016, and subsequent appointment of Secretary Derrick Ramsey, the program is rapidly gaining momentum and diversifying across geographic locations, sectors, and target audiences. As a way of rebranding and modernizing the Program, the Cabinet, in conjunction with the Office of the Governor and other Cabinets with the same vested interests, is hosting a Summit devoted to scaling Kentucky’s Registered Apprentice Program.

The event will take place September 10-12, 2018 at the Kentucky Exposition Center. On the 10th, plenary sessions in the morning will feature the Governor, Secretary Ramsey, internationally renowned speakers and authors from the Urban Institute, and experts in education and workforce initiatives from throughout the country. The afternoon will feature breakout sessions by occupational sector and are designed to encourage businesses to sign on as a Registered Apprentice or Intermediary site, and educational leaders/counselors to promote apprenticeship as a viable option for students pursuing either a career or college track.

The program is sponsored in part by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor and provided at no cost to attendees.

Days two and three of the event feature a College and Career Fair sponsored by UPS. Businesses and colleges will welcome more than 7,000 pre-registered students, veterans, and other interested parties to consider employment/educational opportunities with them.
